Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics haul

Well, now, isn’t that quite a mouthful? From here on out the brand will be called “OCC” which is handy since their website is http://www.occmakeup.com.

Anyways, I’ve been intrigued by this cosmetics company ever since I saw lip tar reviews from Temptalia and Vampy Varnish. The word “tar” in any cosmetics name sounds a little scary, but trust me, you’ll be quite taken with these, I predict.

The claim is that these have the wear of a lipstick, but the ease and shininess of a gloss. But it gets better! After some additional research, I found out that these were made so you could mix the different colors to create your own unique colors. Now, I haven’t done that with the colors that I have in my possession, but believe me, after trying these out, I’m looking in to purchasing a few more and playing around with them.

Also in my order were two nail polishes, because, you know, I have a polish addiction. *ahem* I couldn’t resist; these two just jumped in to my cart! ;)

Oh, the other thing that makes this cosmetics company even more super-double-awesome? They’re vegan and cruelty free! I mean, I’m not vegetarian or vegan by any stretch of the imagination, but to know that about a cosmetics company up front totally gives me warm fuzzies about them. :-D

So, by now I’m sure your thinking, “Enough with the blather, woman! Make w/ the photos and swatches!”

Alright already! Here’s my haul: two polishes-Chlorophyll and Perpetual, three lip tars-Stalker, Vintage, and Anime:

Polish swatches:
Chlorophyll – The color on the website intrigued me the most. For whatever reason, I imagined this to be a brighter, greener jelly polish. The polish was none of these things, however, don’t take that to mean I hated it. This turned out to be a blue based green creme which wasn’t as bright as expected. It applied nicely and covered completely after two coats. For some reason this makes me think of China Glaze’s Four Leaf Clover which I’ll have to dig out and do a comparison on. Anyways, the pictures!

Perpetual – Now Perpetual turned out to be a nice shiny purple jelly. As you can see in the photos below, it was definitely on the sheerer side and even after three coats you can still see a visible nail line (VNL). I don’t have so much of a problem w/ this as I know some ladies out there do, but I think I’m interested to see how this layers on a more opaque base like a ridgefilling base coat or another polish.

The color range for these polishes is really intriguing to me and they’re formula is quite easy to work with. Their nail polish is definitely worth trying out.

Lip Tars
The three lip tars I got were really hard to choose! I decided to go for a bright pink, a bright red (something I can clearly never get enough of), and a darker, more season appropriate shade. I figured the ones I picked I could mix and play with or wear alone. I’m not so sure I could, say, wear reasonably wear any of these to work, but for an evening out, I think they would each be perfectly acceptable on their own.

The formula on all of these was fantastic! I had read that the optimal application procedure would be with a lip brush instead of trying to apply straight out of the tube, so this is what I did. I had also read that you really only needed a tiny bit to get full coverage on your lips, and boy was that true! I was really quite surprised at how little I actually needed. This is a definite plus when you think you’re paying too much ($12.50/tube) for such a little tube, but it’s completely worth it b/c you need so little product for each application. I honestly think I wasted more than I needed to when I swatched these on my hand. Plus the wear on this was pretty darn good (it made through three pieces of pizza for dinner and a glass of wine w/o having to reapply).

L to R: Stalker, Vintage, and Anime

Stalker – This is a blue based dark bright red and not for the faint of heart. I am not at all disappointed with this color.
OCC Lip Tar-Stalker

Vintage – Hmmmm, how would i describe this? I guess I’d call it a deep, plummy burgundy. I really like this and am already plotting how I can try this with some other OCC Lip Tars to make some really yummy colors!
OCC Lip Tar-Vintage

Anime – This is also not for the faint of heart. It’s a very intense, very bright pink, maybe fuchsia even. I’m a huge fan of MAC’s Girl About Town and Show Orchid, so it’s no surprise that this shade speaks to me. Love it!
OCC Lip Tar-Anime

Bottom line: You need these Lip Tars! The colors are awesome and the flexibility that you can get by mixing the different colors really does offer limitless possibilities with this product. They wear really well and you don’t need much product for full coverage. Considering all these factors, $12.50 for each Lip Tar really isn’t really as spendy as you might think.

I know I’ll be hitting OCC Makeup again in the next few months for more Lip Tars and more polishes!

Can I tempt any more readers to try out the Lip Tars?

China Glaze, Vintage Vixen-Part 1

Happy Tuesday!

As you can see there are a few minor changes. They layout is a WordPress layout called Coraline. I opted to use one of my own photos for the header and it’s a squished distorted photo that I took of a roadside landscape on a highway between Santa Fe and Albuquerque in New Mexico. Hopefully this layout is a little easier to navigate and read.

SO, first up on the new, improved (and hopefully more consistent) blog, I have for you China Glaze’s Fall 2010 collection Vintage Vixen-Hotsy Totsy. This will be the first post of two for Vintage Vixen since there are actually two sets of six in the collection-Hotsy Totsy and Cat’s Meow which will go up tomorrow.

This is one of the collections I’d been really looking forward to considering the range of finishes (metallics, foils, and shimmers, oh my!) and different colors offered in the collection.

These polishes actually launched in July and have been available at Sally Beauty Supply stores, for a few weeks. I’ve been sitting on these since August, I think. Clearly, I need to be getting these sooner!

Jitterbug – KristiB, this one has your name all over it! It’s a gunmetal-y grey with a touch of blue and a little sparkley bling to punch it up a notch.
Jitterbug

Jitterbug-closeup

Swing Baby – Some champagne, a little silver, maybe a little gold too, a hint of pink and a touch of classy make this something I could totally see Vintage Vixen rocking out on the dance floor.
Swing Baby

Bogie – The name makes me think of Lauren Bacall in a smokey room in a black and white movie w/ just the right lighting. The actual color seems to go w/ that theme in my mind. It’s a very rich and smoky purple with enough bling to take it out for dinner and dancing.
Bogie

Bogie-closeup

Hey Doll – Kind of pink, kind of mauve, I think I see some silver, and a little bit of shimmer really make think this one looks cute and sweet.

Ingrid – I’m totally in love w/ this one! It’s that taupe-y, greyish, brown or mushroom, if you will, that’s super hot right now. She’s got some golden shimmer that makes also makes her quite special. This one also sort of reminds me of its namesake; it comes across just as strong and elegant as she was.
Ingrid

Foxy – Foxy indeed! I keep looking at the bottle and thinking, “Meh, it’s just another red.” But then I look back at my swatches and I think, “Whoa! Hot mama!” This a great red for the fall; it’s a little bricky, a little purple, with some red and gold shimmer that just makes me think of fall.
Foxy

See anything you like? I think my top three picks are Ingrid, Bogie and Foxy.

Oh, but wait, you say! What was this you were saying about a giveaway today? Well, since I didn’t get the chance to type these posts up yesterday, you’ll have to wait for the last post of the day later tonight!

Random Nail Spam

I’ve had these pics for a while and finally got them off my camera last Sunday. So today you get a random mix of pic spam featuring my nails!

On a side note, how weird is it to see these disembodied hands all the time? Today it’s hands, tomorrow, when I finally get off my ass and do some damn eye looks, it’ll be eyeballs!

ANYWAYS, here’s a random sampling of polishes I’ve been wearing this summer. (I have a feeling random posts like this will happen often since that’s just how I roll-just part of daily entropy courtesy of moi!):

OPI-Charged Up Cherry: This is a great pink creme for the summer. When I got it out of my drawer it was sitting right next to my bottle of OPI-Pink Flamenco and I although both bright pinks they’re pretty different. Charged Up Cherry has a little more orange to it and comes off a little brighter than Pink Flamenco and maybe better for warmer skin tones. Pink Flamenco runs a little cooler and a little bluer and maybe just a touch darker than Charged up Cherry.
Charged Up Cherry Pink Flamenco

China Glaze-Four Leaf Clover: This is one of the weirdest polishes I’ve ever photographed. I took photos indoors w/ flash and outdoors w/ flash and the actual color still isn’t apparent in the photos. The actual color looks quite a bit different-which is darker and greener and not quite so blue. This is actually one of the polishes responsible for starting my new green polish obsession. How can you not like it? It’s such a unique and love shade of green. :-) I think All Lacquered Up has better swatches.

Zoya-Mimi and Happi: Mimi is from the Sparkle collection and Happi is from the Spring Reverie collection. I’m a sucker for purple glitter so I love Mimi and Happi is just so darn happy. It’s not your ordinary pink-it has flashes of gold and green which make this pink subtly different from other pinks in your collection.

I’m totally loving bright, sparkly colors for summer, but w/ the fall colors coming out already, I can’t wait for the fall now! Which is funny, b/c I remember being impatient for the spring/summer to start so I could start using those colors. Anyone else find that happening to them?

Tuesday Bling-tacular

Glitter…how can you not like glitter? It’s just so sparkly, shiny and adds a little something extra. And dammit, it’s glitter! I often get distracted by pretty shinies. :-)

In any case, when I started really obsessing over nail polish (srsly, this may require therapy), I wasn’t sure what I would have called my favorite finish. After reflecting on it a little bit, I realized that the whole reason I got in to nail polish was b/c the jewelry obsession I had been indulging in was far too expensive and completely not sustainable in any way. (Hello only spending $8 per bottle of polish instead of $100+ per jewelry piece!)

Nail polish was a perfect obsession replacement since it’s pretty much like jewelry for your nails, it’s waaaay cheaper, AND there are so many options to choose from to change up your look. Enter glitter nail polish.

The beauty of glitter nail polish is that there’s quite a variety of sizes and shapes. This allows for just a little shimmer or an all out bling-fest. I personally prefer to shout from the rooftops, “HEY! I’M WEARING GLITTER!” I swear to you, if I could get away w/ wearing bright red sequins to work, I would do it.

Now, having rambled for over 200 words (Yay WordPress and the word count!), I think I’ve found a love that will last forever. I spotted these babies during the Nordstrom anniversary sale pre-order. Those of you familiar with Deborah Lippmann’s Ruby Red Slippers know how beautiful it is w/ the chunky glitter pieces and saw something similar in the promo pics for Across the Universe and Bad Romance. I just HAD TO HAVE THEM! So I bought them and swatched them. I think everyone needs these bad boys in their polish stash.

Across the Universe is dark blue/navy jelly with green and blue glitter which applied quite nicely and covered completely after three coats.
Across the Universe indoors with flash

Across the Universe macro

Bad Romance was a black jelly with dark pink glitter and reminded me a little of Ruby Red Slippers (which is totally not a bad thing). This also covered nicely in three coats. I suppose I could have done just two for this one, but three is how I roll for polishes like this.
Bad Romance

Bad Romance macro

The macro shots show how dense the different sized glitter is. These shots are also nice b/c the previous layers of glitter don’t just get lost, they add to the overall dimensionality on the nail.

LOVE IT!

First Post

It’s Saturday night (technically Sunday morning as it’s 1:27 in the AM) and I’m at home after having watched the fabulous Kathy Griffin perform at the Fox Theater. In my typical scatter-brained manner, I’m petting my cat, surfing the web, Tweeting, and IMing w/ one of my besties, Diana (the art maven responsible for the designs you will see here, and yes Brad, you get a shout-out too!) whilst listening to my husband attempt to organize the unwieldy music collection currently on his 1.5 TB HD (which we’re still not sure will fit the rest of the music collection which hasn’t been digitized and consists of approximately 2,000+ CDs). However, I digress; I’ve been wracking my brains trying to think up catchy/appealing blog names. B/c everybody knows when trying to launch something as important (please note the sarcasm) as a beauty blog, one must pay special attention to branding.

In any case, I’ve been babbling about blog names to pretty much anyone who will listen (so sadly this falls to the aforementioned husband and bestie). There have been numerous attempts at capturing the essence that is me and my scatterbrained existence. By day, I’m an engineer at a Li-Ion battery company in the Midwest (for those in to alternative energy, this shouldn’t be too difficult to narrow down). By night, I collapse from exhaustion from the long hours I work (it’s true!) on the couch w/ kitties and nail polish. Thankfully I manage to avoid nail polish on the cats. ;-)

(Yeah…so the rest of this post is written like 2 weeks after the initial two paragraphs above.)
SO, based on these factors, I’d been tossing around ideas that conveyed a generic nail polish/cosmetics theme or that also incorporated science/engineering w/ cosmetics. One of the names considered, but ultimately tossed out was “Lucky Lacquer” which seemed pretty cute. Unfortunately, a similar URL had already been taken http://www.luckylacquers.com which, for the record, has nothing to do w/ nail polish.

Another was pretty brilliant, in my opinion, but made for an impossibly long URL which, let’s be honest ladies, you don’t want to spend five minutes trying to figure out how you misspelled madamecuriesmakeupbox.com. The latter was actually something the hubby came up w/ in an attempt to help me identify a viable blog name and end the obsession surrounding THAT little quest. He then informed me of one the names he thought of, but mentally tossed aside: Makeup and Entropy with the related tagline, “Creating disorder from order and looking glamorous while doing it.”

LIGTHBULB! That was fatntastic! How he could have thought that was a discardable (yeah, “That’s not even a word!” Props to anyone who can name what that little gem is from) is beyond me. Thus, the idea of Makeup and Entropy was born!

So, what is Makeup and Entropy you ask? Why yes, I am getting to a point in a rather convoluted way! Makeup and entropy is pretty self explanatory, well, I suppose once you know what entropy means-it’s basically a measure of microscopic disorder in a system (WOOT! Using my ChE degree after all! TOTALLY worth the small fortune I’m still in debt for to get it!)

ANYWAYS, anyone who’s close to me knows exactly how disorganized and random I am. My poor husband has often found the remote control in various locations around the house other than in the living room-where it belongs. I’m also the type to start a small task, then walk away from it, completely forgetting what I’d initially intended to do, you know, such mundane things as feed the cats. >.> Hence, why I use “entropy” to describe this blog’s ramblings about cosmetics-a sick, beautiful addiction I have. So much so, that it was suggested that I start a blog to share that obsession w/ the masses.

In my day to day life, it’s pretty amazing for me to manage getting out of the house put together in any way. *I* like to think I manage to look glamorous (or at the very least, presentable) when walking out the door.

Perhaps my new reading audience can help me out w/ that-let me know what you think about my swatches and looks? Help me grow and be a better blogger and cosmetics photographer? ;-)

Well…if not, there’s always talking to myself!

For now, please enjoy the entropy inspired offering of various nail polish swatches.

Cheers!
