GO BLUE!

Yeah, I’m jumping on the bandwagon. The long standing rivalry between the University of Michigan (UofM) and Michigan State University (MSU) reaches another showdown this Saturday in the Big House in Ann Arbor, MI.

Being a College of Engineering graduate from U of M, I bleed maize and blue. I thought it only appropriate to do my newest manicure in those colors or at least a somewhat stylized variant for the purposes of nail art.

I’m not super great at nail art, so I purchased some tools from teh internets after much research concerning the fine art of Konad stamping. Basically, there’s a laser etched, stainless steel plate etched with some design. You apply nail polish on to the image, use a plastic card to wipe the excess polish of the plate, take a rubber stamping transfer tool and transfer the image on to the stamp. Once the image has been transferred on to the stamping tool, you align the design w/ your nail and apply the image on the nail, and voila! Nail art!

For the Wolverine inspired fauxnad (not real Konad since that’s a brand name for the tools and plates and I used Bundle Monster image plate #18), I used Orly Royal Navy as the base and a yellow Konad Special Nail Polish that I received from a special Coraline stamping kit. This is maybe the 3rd or 4th time I’ve ever done stamped nail art, so I still have to perfect my technique, hence the uneven application of the yellow flame design. It’s definitely by far easier than if I did it by hand, but certainly takes some getting used to.

Behold! My maize and blue creation!

So this is the nail art I’ll be sporting as I cheer on my alma mater.

GO BLUE!

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics haul

Well, now, isn’t that quite a mouthful? From here on out the brand will be called “OCC” which is handy since their website is http://www.occmakeup.com.

Anyways, I’ve been intrigued by this cosmetics company ever since I saw lip tar reviews from Temptalia and Vampy Varnish. The word “tar” in any cosmetics name sounds a little scary, but trust me, you’ll be quite taken with these, I predict.

The claim is that these have the wear of a lipstick, but the ease and shininess of a gloss. But it gets better! After some additional research, I found out that these were made so you could mix the different colors to create your own unique colors. Now, I haven’t done that with the colors that I have in my possession, but believe me, after trying these out, I’m looking in to purchasing a few more and playing around with them.

Also in my order were two nail polishes, because, you know, I have a polish addiction. *ahem* I couldn’t resist; these two just jumped in to my cart! ;)

Oh, the other thing that makes this cosmetics company even more super-double-awesome? They’re vegan and cruelty free! I mean, I’m not vegetarian or vegan by any stretch of the imagination, but to know that about a cosmetics company up front totally gives me warm fuzzies about them. :-D

So, by now I’m sure your thinking, “Enough with the blather, woman! Make w/ the photos and swatches!”

Alright already! Here’s my haul: two polishes-Chlorophyll and Perpetual, three lip tars-Stalker, Vintage, and Anime:

Polish swatches:
Chlorophyll – The color on the website intrigued me the most. For whatever reason, I imagined this to be a brighter, greener jelly polish. The polish was none of these things, however, don’t take that to mean I hated it. This turned out to be a blue based green creme which wasn’t as bright as expected. It applied nicely and covered completely after two coats. For some reason this makes me think of China Glaze’s Four Leaf Clover which I’ll have to dig out and do a comparison on. Anyways, the pictures!

Perpetual – Now Perpetual turned out to be a nice shiny purple jelly. As you can see in the photos below, it was definitely on the sheerer side and even after three coats you can still see a visible nail line (VNL). I don’t have so much of a problem w/ this as I know some ladies out there do, but I think I’m interested to see how this layers on a more opaque base like a ridgefilling base coat or another polish.

The color range for these polishes is really intriguing to me and they’re formula is quite easy to work with. Their nail polish is definitely worth trying out.

Lip Tars
The three lip tars I got were really hard to choose! I decided to go for a bright pink, a bright red (something I can clearly never get enough of), and a darker, more season appropriate shade. I figured the ones I picked I could mix and play with or wear alone. I’m not so sure I could, say, wear reasonably wear any of these to work, but for an evening out, I think they would each be perfectly acceptable on their own.

The formula on all of these was fantastic! I had read that the optimal application procedure would be with a lip brush instead of trying to apply straight out of the tube, so this is what I did. I had also read that you really only needed a tiny bit to get full coverage on your lips, and boy was that true! I was really quite surprised at how little I actually needed. This is a definite plus when you think you’re paying too much ($12.50/tube) for such a little tube, but it’s completely worth it b/c you need so little product for each application. I honestly think I wasted more than I needed to when I swatched these on my hand. Plus the wear on this was pretty darn good (it made through three pieces of pizza for dinner and a glass of wine w/o having to reapply).

L to R: Stalker, Vintage, and Anime

Stalker – This is a blue based dark bright red and not for the faint of heart. I am not at all disappointed with this color.
OCC Lip Tar-Stalker

Vintage – Hmmmm, how would i describe this? I guess I’d call it a deep, plummy burgundy. I really like this and am already plotting how I can try this with some other OCC Lip Tars to make some really yummy colors!
OCC Lip Tar-Vintage

Anime – This is also not for the faint of heart. It’s a very intense, very bright pink, maybe fuchsia even. I’m a huge fan of MAC’s Girl About Town and Show Orchid, so it’s no surprise that this shade speaks to me. Love it!
OCC Lip Tar-Anime

Bottom line: You need these Lip Tars! The colors are awesome and the flexibility that you can get by mixing the different colors really does offer limitless possibilities with this product. They wear really well and you don’t need much product for full coverage. Considering all these factors, $12.50 for each Lip Tar really isn’t really as spendy as you might think.

I know I’ll be hitting OCC Makeup again in the next few months for more Lip Tars and more polishes!

Can I tempt any more readers to try out the Lip Tars?

Bling-tastic Tuesday…or Wednesday Vol. 5

Let’s get ready for the Tuesday…or Wednesday bling-tacular spectacular!!!

First thing’s first, don’t forget to check out the last of yesterday’s posts where I talk about my first ever giveaway here!

Haha, ok, now that I’ve got that off my chest, how’s your Hump Day going? Mine is crazy busy (well, I think all the work days of the week are for me!) between “normal” work activities, travel planning for business trips this month and next, as well as the hot issues of the day, I’m not sure how I have time to breathe.

This is actually why Mr. Entropy and I took off for a week to Traverse City, MI-that’s a city that’s right on Lake Michigan on the western side of the state. I’d never been to that part of the state and we’ve been a little cash poor after the emergency, uninsured feline spinal surgery earlier this year.

[Tangent] The little, orange guy in the photo below was having trouble walking at the beginning of this year. When we took him to an emergency specialist the weekend his hind legs completely failed him (we had already taken him to the vet twice in the span of 1.5 weeks), we found out he had ruptured a disc in his spine. This required a very expensive MRI and surgery. He’s no longer as mobile as he once was, and he can’t run and jump like he wants to, but he can stand, walk and use his litter box all by himself now, so we’re pretty pleased. :-)

Anyways, we rented this beautiful condo that was probably less than a five minute drive from downtown Traverse City that was on the second floor of what was the Northern Michigan Asylum. Yeah, you read that right. The place we stayed used to be a mental institution! Those who know me fairly well would assert that this would be an appropriate venue for us to stay. ;-)

So, while we were there. Gilt had a sale on several designs of Converse including styles like Chuck Taylors and Jack Purcells. It was during this sale that I saw these bad boys and HAD TO HAVE THEM!
Ombre Sequin Converse Chucks

Yep, those are indeed ombre sequinned Chuck Taylors in lovely, varying shades of blue. I’ve decided that they are my fancy sneakers for when I want to be classy and add a touch of bling to my outfit. ;-)

Speaking of bling, I didn’t want to leave you hanging w/ just one shoe pic to get blingy w/ it. The polish I’ve decided to showcase today is by Color Club called Revvvolution from their Spring 2009 collection, “Femme Fatale.” Yep, three “V”s. It’s cooler that way. ;-)

As you can see below, it’s a really unique dark grey/black holo much like OPI’s My Private Jet (or so I’m told b/c I don’t own it for comparison). I can’t say enough how gorgeous and amazing this polish is. You could get away w/ just one coat of this stuff, but just for posterity, I used two coats. I also couldn’t decide between all the photos I took so you get to stare at the four below. :)
